“A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned!”

Big News For Seniors 55+….Discounts and Savings Are All Around – Just Look!

The number of senior citizens is expected to soar from 40 to 89 million between now and 2050, according to U.S. News and World Report. It’s a demographic that simply can’t be ignored.  Additionally, with the Social Security cost of living increase expected for 2019, those seniors can expect a few more pennies in their bank accounts.  However, as the cost of living still rises every day, taking advantage of discounts available is a benefit every senior should be utilizing.

The most obvious discount presented to every senior is an AARP membership.  Being a member of the AARP offers a vast majority of senior discounts for many products and services. Present your card and “get exclusive savings, including a $55 eye exam, 30% off a complete pair of eyeglasses, and 40% off Transitions® lenses with a frame purchase at Pearle Vision.” (, 2018)

Participants in many Medicare Advantage or other private group retiree health plans can access free SilverSneakers fitness program classes and gym memberships nationwide (  When most gym memberships run from $30+ a month this is a considerable perk. features grocery store and pharmacy discounts stating “on a certain day of the week, shoppers as young as age 55 can save 5% to 10% off their weekly shopping costs.” (Apr, 2018)

Jiffy Lube and Midas offer senior discounts nationwide, Kohl’s gives a 15% discount every Wednesday for those at least 60, and with 300 department store locations in 16 states, Belk offers a discount to those 55+ on the first Tuesday of every month.  If you’re looking for a cell-phone deal, T-Mobile’s “Unlimited 55+ plan” offers two wireless lines from $60 a month.  Also, the first Monday of the month is a national senior citizen event day at Stein-Mart when all customers 55+ receive an additional 20% off red dot and clearance items.

The hospitality industry also has many special senior discounts to offer.  Many restaurants offer a standard 10% discount for seniors or an early bird price when dining before 5pm like at Olive Garden or Ihop. Of course, there’s always the good ole’ Dunkin Donuts senior deal of a free donut with every large coffee purchased.

At most of its locations, Carmike Cinemas offer seniors 65 and older up to 35% off the regular admission price.  Seniors 60-plus can save up to 30% on regular admission or 60% on “Tuesday Senior Days,” at AMC theater and Showcase Cinemas offer a discounted $6 admission for the 60+ crowd on “Senior Wednesdays.”

When it comes to travel, seniors have lots of offers out there even without the AARP card.  Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival cruise lines offer discount rates to cruisers 55 and over and Amtrak provides a 15% discount to travelers 62 years or older.  If you’re flying in the USA, travelers 65+ on Southwest Airlines are not only offered discounted fares but they are also fully refundable.   Once you’ve arrived, seniors can take advantage of discounted hotel rates of 15-50%!

Searching for cost savings through paying for services quarterly or annually instead of monthly is also a great way to ensure the most cost effectiveness.  Home and automobile insurance are one example.  In fact, according to a Geico insurance representative, (Oct 2018) paying auto insurance every 6 months will offer a savings of about $30 over electing to pay monthly.  (

Even medic alert type devices and equipment offer savings options.  Around the Clock Medical Alarms offers its standard landline, home based alarm device (PERS) for $36 a month or $30 if paid annually providing a savings of $72.  The benefit of paying quarterly or annually is a great option for all customers to find a significant cost savings. ( offers transportable electric mobility scooter rental starting at $440 per month but with its “engaged loyalty program” customers earn points towards a free 3-day rental and eventually a free scooter.

The AARP newsletter features discounts to members, is an online directory of US businesses that offer discounts to the 50+ crowd in a free weekly newsletter, and offers free financial advice and daily e-mail updates on the latest discounts, freebies, sales and clearances.

You can also find great offers on company Facebook pages, advertisements and through the local marketplace.  By simply “liking” and sharing information from companies and products with your friends you can earn discounts and prizes.   The Around the Clock Medical Alarms FaceBook page informative articles, discounts, and contests that are available to its followers.

Retirement for many seniors means living on a fixed income so seeking out and taking advantage of the many discount opportunities available shouldn’t be missed.  These are the golden years so don’t miss those golden opportunities.  Remember, every penny counts!  Benjamin Franklin summed it up best when he said, “A penny saved is a penny earned!”
